  1. NFL Hall of Famer Mike Munchuk Line Coaching DVD

Bruce Matthews with Mike Munchak

Bruce Matthews with Mike Munchak

Hall of Fame guard Mike Munchak enters his ninth season as the Titans offensive line coach. Munchak has become one of the most respected offensive line coaches in the NFL for his ability to teach and produce technically sound offensive lines despite annual changes to his positional group. Since becoming offensive line coach in 1997, he has yet to have the same starting five offensive linemen from one year to the next and that will again be the case in 2006.

Although the names have changed on a yearly basis, Munchak has consistently shown the ability to train younger talent. The last three years are no exception. Last year, he tutored rookie tackle Michael Roos, who only had three years of offensive line experience, well enough to earn a starting role for all 16 games. The line ranked 10th in the league in fewest sacks allowed with 31. In 2004, then-rookie guard Jacob Bell replaced Zach Piller, who was injured in the opening game, and Bell would go on to earn all-rookie honors. The offense didn’t miss a beat, ranking 11th in the league in total offense and producing a 1,000-yard rusher in Chris Brown and two 1,100-yard receivers in Derrick Mason and Drew Bennett. In 2003, he mentored Justin Hartwig into the Titans starting center despite Hartwig never having played the position. The line took time to come together in 2003, but would finish in the league’s Top 10 in fewest sacks allowed, providing protection for NFL co-MVP Steve McNair and paving the way for another 1,000-yard rushing season for RB Eddie George.

Under Munchak’s direction, the Titans offensive line has shown versatility as it has been transformed from a bruising-type, grind-it out line that helped George rush for a career-high 1,509 yards in 2000, to a more diverse offense that can protect the quarterback, but still retain the ability to maul an opponent. Since 1999, the Titans rank fifth in the NFL in fewest sacks allowed with 216.

One of the greatest Oilers of all-time, Munchak joined the club’s front office in 1994, assisting the offensive coaching staff and providing quality control. He was later promoted to offensive line coach in 1997.

A former first-round draft choice of the Oilers (eighth overall) in 1982, Munchak played in 159 regular season games (fourth all-time on club’s list) and 10 playoff games before retiring on July 21, 1994.

Munchak became the fifth player in franchise history to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame (July, 2001) and the first to enter the Hall after playing his entire career with the franchise. He was introduced by long-time teammate and friend Bruce Matthews, who became the first active NFL player to make a Hall of Fame induction.

When he retired from playing, Munchak owned the club mark with nine Pro Bowl invitations. He had his uniform (#63) retired on Nov. 6, 1996, marking only the fourth jersey (at that time) in Oilers history to be retired (Earl Campbell’s #34, Jim Norton’s #43 and Elvin Bethea’s #65 were the others). He also was named to the inaugural class of the Titans/Oilers Hall of Fame and elected to the Pennsylvania, Texas and Polish-American Sports Hall of Fames. Lastly, he was honored as one of the 38 Sports Legends of Houston prior to Super Bowl XXXVIII Pa. (3/5/60), A native of Scranton, and graduate of Penn State

DVD #2. University of Tennessee Head Coaching Phil Fulmer Offensive Line Practice Drills

a-fulmer1639-250.jpg
VOLS UNDER FULMER
  • UT has been in the national polls at game time for 151 of Fulmer's 168 games as head coach.
  • Captured the school's second consensus national title with a perfect 13-0 record in 1998
  • Won a pair of Southeastern Conference championships (1997, 1998) and six SEC Eastern Division crowns (1993, 1997, 1998, 2001, 2003, 2004)
  • Posted a 87-27 record against SEC opponents
  • Won 41 of 71 games against nationally-ranked opponents
  • Won 77 of 93 games played at Neyland Stadium
  • Played in 12 January bowl games
  • Since 1996 has a nation's-best 64 players selected in the NFL Draft, including 12 first-round picks

Fulmer finished 9-4 overall last season against opponents that sported a combined record of 89-61 (.593). The Vols were 5-3 in league play, good enough for second place in the Eastern Division. Wins over top-10 foes California and Georgia nearly offset narrow setbacks to BCS bowl teams Florida and LSU.

In fact, three of Tennessee's four losses came to teams ranked among the top 15 nationally at season's end.

One alteration from a challenging 2005 campaign was the hiring of David Cutcliffe as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator.

The trio has a combined 72 years of coaching in the SEC and Tennessee's record when coaching together - Fulmer as head coach, Chavis as defensive coordinator and Cutcliffe as offensive coordinator - is an amazing 53-9 (.855).

The dean of Southeastern Conference coaches, Fulmer has claimed a national championship, two conference titles and six divisional crowns while winning better than three-quarters of his games. He also retains his rank atop the winning percentage list for coaches with at least 10 years experience in Division I-A.

Eight Phillip Fulmer-coached teams have eclipsed the 10-win mark and two others just missed with nine victories. The highlight came in 1998 when Tennessee capped a perfect 13-0 season with a Fiesta Bowl victory over Florida State.

That was the first season of Bowl Championship Series competition and in nine years hence, no team has won more than one championship in what has become a balanced collegiate football landscape.

The Volunteers under their native son have 137 triumphs against only 41 defeats for a winning percentage of .770. No active coach with at least a decade in Division I-A has such a lofty victory rate.

And speaking of the last 10 years, Tennessee under Fulmer is 94-32 over that span.

DVD #3.  George Deleone Syracuse University Offensive Line Coach

George DeLeone, who has 36 seasons of coaching experience and 13 postseason bowl games on his resume, is in his second year as offensive coordinator at Temple University. After instructing quarterbacks in 2006, he will relinquish his role with the signal-callers in 2007 and will instruct interior offensive linemen. He arrived in Owl Country after spending the 2005 campaign as run game coordinator and offensive line coach at Ole Miss.

DeLeone, a former Broyles Award finalist as national assistant coach of the year, has a long history of developing professional players. More than 20 of his pupils have played in the NFL, including current players Keith Bullock (Indianapolis Colts), Morlon Greenwood (Houston Texans) and Kevin Sampson (Kansas City Chiefs).

Twenty years of DeLeone's coaching career was spent at Syracuse. He joined the program in 1985 as an offensive line coach under Dick MacPherson and was elevated to offensive coordinator in 1987, a position he held through 1996. After a one year-stint as offensive line coach with the San Diego Chargers in 1997, he returned to Syracuse in 1998 under Paul Pasqualoni, who assumed the head coaching duties in 1991. From 1998 to 2004, DeLeone was the associate head coach at Syracuse, while also serving as defensive coordinator in 1998, quarterbacks coach in 1999 and offensive line coach from 2000-04.

During his tenure as Syracuse's offensive coordinator, DeLeone built a pro-option attack that ranked as one of the most balanced and productive offenses in the country. In that span, SU earned eight bowl bids and had quarterbacks who ranked among the national leaders in passing every year and in the top six four times. In 1993, Marvin Graves re-wrote the quarterback's section of the SU record book, and DeLeone helped point former SU standout Donovan McNabb in the same direction. DeLeone also helped guide the Orange to Big East Championships in 1996, 1998 and 2004.

In 2003, DeLeone's offense produced a 1,000-yard rusher for the fourth consecutive season. Walter Reyes gained 1,347 yards, the second-best single-season rushing total in Syracuse history. Reyes accumulated 1,135 yards in 2002, while James Mungro compiled 1,170 rushing yards in 2001, one year after Dee Brown amassed 1,031 yards in 2000.

DeLeone began his coaching career in 1970 at Southern Connecticut State as an offensive line coach. He was promoted to head coach in 1976, a spot he held through 1979. DeLeone moved to the Division I level in 1980, coaching under Frank Burns at Rutgers from 1980-83. At RU, he served as the Scarlet Knights' defensive coordinator and also was the offensive and defensive line coach. He was the offensive coordinator at Holy Cross for one season in 1984.

A native of New Haven, Conn., DeLeone received his bachelor's degree in physical education from Connecticut in 1970 and his master's in education from Southern Connecticut State in 1971. DeLeone and his wife, Roberta, have two sons, Andy, a Penn graduate, and Mark, a student at the University of Iowa.
